About the Department

The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2006 in Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts & Science with the vision to be and remain a leading centre in education, research and entrepreneurship in Biotechnology. Post Graduation (PG) courses commenced from the year 2006. The Department was recognized as research Department from the year 2010 and has been consistently involved in research and extension activities. The Department is supported with DST-FIST and DBT Star College scheme. Research and extension activities and out-reach programmes are regularly conducted by the Department. Faculty members in the Department are experienced in Microbial metabolomics, Environmental Microbiology, Bionanomaterial Sciences, Plant and Molecular Biotechnology, Pharmacogenetics, Behavioural Neuroscience, Cancer biology, etc.,

The teaching approach of the undergraduate and post graduate programmes offered by our department of Biotechnology combines the conservative with the innovative, in-order to articulate a multi-disciplinary perspective on Biotechnology, which is holistic and pragmatic. Such a versatile and innovative approach is sure to provide students with the necessary resources to face the challenging working environment after graduation. Our programmes are structured in such a way as to allow students to acquire useful perspectives on emerging technology while maintaining core focus.

Infrastructure

The department  has sophisticated facilities viz., UG Laboratory, PG Laboratory and Research Laboratories includes UV Spectrophotometer, Refrigerated Microcentrifuge, High Speed Centrifuge, PCR Machine, ELISA Reader, Electroblotter, Inverted Microscope, CO2 Incubator, Gel Documentation Unit,  deep freezer, Bioreactor, Walk-in Cold Room, etc.,


The department is supported by DBT-STAR college and DST-FIST schemes.

  • Mr. S. J. Ashok, Ms. G. Mageswari, Ms. M. Sneha, and Ms. R. Subhavarshini have been selected for the 30-day Skill Training for Research, Innovation, and Developing Entrepreneurship (STRIDE) Module of DST-TEC at Bundelkhand University, Jhansi, in August 2024.
  • Ms. Ilakkya L received "Nobel World Records" in Silambam in July 2024.
  • Ms. G. Mageswari participated in the DST-SERB Karyashala Programme on “Application of Hyphenated Mass Spectrometric Techniques GC-MS and LC-MS in Plant Research” held at the Central Instrumentation Facility, KSCSTE-Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Palode, Thiruvananthapuram in March 2024. She was awarded a travel grant for this program.

Faculty Achievements

  • Ms. A. Aswini won Best Poster Presentation Award at "2nd International Conference on Emerging Contaminants in water and Environment -2023" in February 2023.
  • Dr. R. Subashkumar, Dr. M. Gogul Ramnath and Ms. A. Aswini received SEED Money in August 2023.
  • The faculty members and the students of the department have published 30 articles in the SCI/Scopus indexed journals during the academic year 2023-2024.

B.Sc Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the research-oriented science including a fusion of biology and technology. This programme encompasses a large variety of subjects including Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Animal Biotechnology and Plant Biotechnology. It is associated with other subjects such as, Biostatistics, Cell Biology, Nanobiotechnology, IPR etc.
